A deserving Nelsonian is enjoying the benefits of a warmer, drier and healthier home thanks to Comfortmaster NZ.
Neil Scott and his three children received a free-of-charge ventilation system to help support their bid to live healthier, stronger lives despite chronic breathing issues.
Mr Scott described the gifted system as “just amazing”, he said it was “such a relief” to know he wouldn’t have to worry so much for his son’s health.
Mr Scott lives on a mere $400 a week, his mortgage payments are $177 each week and sometimes, day-to-day life can be a struggle.
“As soon as I’m out of financial problems I’m going to get a heat transfer system,” he said.
He was a prime candidate for a ventilation system because his home was so damp the window frames were beginning to warp.
Moisture build-up affected their health
The moisture build-up affected the health of the whole household.
A sick man, Mr Scott lives with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (a lung condition), spinal arthritis and asthma. His two sons also have asthma. Scott is unable to work but determined to provide.
He is working with Christians Against Poverty, an organisation which supports clients to budget and become financially stable.
“When the boys get the flu they get it bad. I always make sure they have their inhalers,” he said.
“I find it helps.”
He volunteers at the Victory Community Centre, collecting and delivering donated foods for distribution.
“If I work for the community at the school then if I need veggies I can get veggies from there. I can get bread from there and it all helps to keep the kids fed,” he said.

“I’ve got an automatic direct debit going from my benefit straight to the power which now has money in there so it builds up a wee bit to have a buffer.”
Company's support
Comfortmaster regional manager Marc Stewart said he felt the Scott family were perfect candidates for the company’s support.
“While we can’t help everyone in need, Neil is a stand-up guy. He’s taking care of three kids and an active community member, I was delighted we could help him out a bit,” Stewart said.
“When we come across a situation where the person has no other options, we certainly try to help them out if we can.
“We come across a lot of cases of kids with asthma and this positive air pressure system can help.”
The system would work for the family because it constantly pushed stale air out of the home and replaced it with fresh air.
Stewart said the system was great for people suffering from asthma because it increased the home air quality.
